Grass Collection to stop.

The Commissioners have taken the decision to not to continue with the Grass Collections using the orange bins.

This decision was made after a number of factors were taken into consideration: The grass that was collected had been taken to the Southern Civic Amenity Site where is was deposited free of charge. It was then composted and made available as compost for purchase. However, this is no longer the case. The green waste deposited is now charged for and is not composted. Therefore, there is no value in continuing with the dedicated orange bin collections. Other disposal routes have been explored, but unfortunately no viable alternative solution could be found.

When your orange bin is next full, please leave it out with your green bin on the usual collection day. Our staff will then empty the bin and take it away. Grass and other green can then in future be put in with your normal waste.

Kerbside collection of paper recycling to stop

The Commissioners have taken the decision to stop the collections of paper for recycling with immediate effect. In recent years the volume of paper collected has reduced dramatically and it is no longer viable financially or environmentally responsible to continue with kerbside collections. This will also free up resources that can be diverted to other tasks throughout the parish. The Commissioners are keen for residents to continue recycling their paper and encourage the use of the recycling ‘bring banks’ located throughout the parish. Paper, glass and metal can be deposited at these sites, which are located at: St Marks, Derbyhaven and in Ballasalla – Abbotswood, Lower Clagh Vane, Railway Station, Rushen Abbey and the Commissioners Offices. Additional bring banks will be introduced within the redevelopment of Upper Clagh Vane and the new Dandara development once completed.

The grass collections (orange bin) have also now finished for the year, a decision on when and if these recommence will be made in due course. Please do not use the orange bin in the meantime for general waste as these will not be emptied.
